The family plans to release a statement later today.

World Wrestling Entertainment confirmed his death and offered condolences to family, friends and fans.

Laurinaitis has spent the majority of his wrestling career with his partner road warrior Hawk.

Together, they formed The Road Warriors. The tag team was honoured at WWE's Hall of Fame in 2011.

Laurinaitis was one of 50 former professional wrestlers who filed a lawsuit against WWE, claiming that he failed to protect them from frequent head injuries, including concussions that resulted in long-term brain damage. Earlier this month, the US Second Circuit Court of Appeals in New York City agreed with a federal judge in Connecticut, who had brought the lawsuits two years earlier, saying that many of the cases were absurd or were filed after the statute of limitations expired. WWE in Stamford, Connecticut denied the lawsuit allegations.

On December 14, 2008, Joe Laurinaitis took several photos after his son was awarded the Lotte Trophy Award in Newport Beach, California.

Snuka and Fujiwara died in 2017 and 2016, respectively, and were diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy after their deaths, according to their lawyers.

The lawsuit, which made WWE President Vince McMahon indicted, said the organization knew the risks of head injuries but did not warn the wrestlers. However, US District Court Judge Vanessa Bryant in Hartford said there is no evidence WWE knew that concussions or blows to the head during wrestling matches caused CTE.

WWE is saddened to learn that Joe Laurinaitis, known to WWE fans as Road Warrior Animal, is gone.

WWE offers its condolences to Laurinaitis' family, friends and fans.

"I feel so sad to hear the loss of my dear friend and great opponent, Joe Laurinaitis, a legendary road warrior. They were so creative!" WWE wrestler Ric Flair tweeted.
